What is CBD & How Can It Help You?

The compound CBD or lesser known Cannabidiol, to use the correct term, is quickly changing the debate surrounding the use of Cannabis as a medicine. There are many high street shops, online sites selling a mass array of strengths flavours, applications, versions, vapes and oils and all manner of hemp extract products from hemp fibre made bags, coffee, clothes and teabags, the list is never ending.

Most people have heard of  THC, which is the psyco-active ingredient in Cannabis that gets users high. These Genus plants of Cannabis usual surround the term Indica. Where as CBD is usually surrounded by the term Sativa.

Cannabinoids – What is CBD?

A key ingredient in cannabis, and is one of over 100 plus compounds found in cannabis, that belong to a class of molecules called cannabinoids. Of these compounds, CBD and THC are usually present in the highest concentrations, and are therefore the most recognized and studied. Cannabidiol is non-psychoactive! This means IT DOES NOT get you high!

The CBD and THC levels tend to vary among different plants and strains.

Cannabis grown for recreational purposes often contains more THC than CBD. Where as Hemp Flowers,  plants and buds contain 0% THC (or less than 0.2%) and available at varying strengths of Rich Cannabidiol content. Hemp plants are like cannabis but without the THC rich content, a typical hemp plant wouldn’t usually contain more than 0.3%.

Cannabidiol is non-psychoactive because it does not act on the same pathways as THC.

These pathways, called CB1 receptors, are highly concentrated in the brain and are responsible for the mind-altering effects of THC.

CBD reduces the negative effects of THC. A 2011 review published in Current Drug Safety concludes that CBD “does not interfere with several psychomotor and psychological functions.”

The authors add that several studies suggest that CBD is “well tolerated and safe” even at high doses.

CBD & Cannabinoid Benefits

The Cannabidiol compound seems to offer natural protection against the Cannabis high and can extinguish some of the overwhelming affects people may feel when high. This is why for some, the Sativa variety of recreational Cannabis is a good choice for some.

Numerous studies suggest that Cannabidiol acts to reduce the intoxicating effects of THC, such as memory impairment, anxiety and paranoia.

It also appears to counteract the sleep-inducing effects of THC, which may explain why some strains of cannabis are known to increase alertness. Again this would more point to a sativa or sativa dominant variety strain.

Wikepedia states the following…

Cannabidiol (CBD) (INN)[5] is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in cannabis.

It is a major phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant’s extract.

Cannabidiol is considered to have a wide scope of potential medical applications -due to clinical reports showing the lack of side effects.

Particularly a lack of psych activity (as is typically associated with ∆9-THC). And non-interference with several psychomotor learning and psychological functions.
